The dynamics of travertine dams

چکیده
We present a simple, abstract model for travertine dam formation. The simulation uses a depth-averaged hydrodynamic code, coupled with an empirical precipitation model where surface-normal growth rate is proportional to local flow rate. The dynamics of the resulting formation, coarsening and migration (progradation) of crests is demonstrated and compared with field observations. The local self-enhancement of crests, due to increasing flow rate, in combination with lateral inhibition due to upstream drowning, implies a classical pattern formation system with a characteristic dam size, however this wavelength is not stable but increasing. The model also reproduces crest lobes, step bunching and other processes that contribute to the complex dynamics of travertine systems. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dynamics of precipitation pattern formation at geothermal hot springs.
We formulate and model the dynamics of spatial patterns arising during the precipitation of calcium carbonate from a supersaturated shallow water flow. The model describes the formation of travertine deposits at geothermal hot springs and rimstone dams of calcite in caves. We find explicit solutions for travertine domes at low flow rates, identify the linear instabilities which generate dam and...
متن کاملDetermination of Travertine Outcrop Types in Tazerj (Northern Hormozgan) using Mineralogical and Geochemical Data
The Tazerj travertine deposits are located 25 km northwest of Haji Abad and 5 km northeast of Tazerj Village in Hormozgan Province, southern Iran. This area is part of the Folded Zagros Zone. The studied travertine deposits are located on Eocene deposits and were most likely formed through the dissolution and re-deposition of groundwater and atmospheric waters onto the Asmari limestone. The pet...

In this research, a deep explosion in the reservoir of a concrete gravity dam has simulated by the coupled Euler –Lagrange finite element method. The validity of explosion hydrodynamics pressure has compared with Taylor empirical formula. The surface sloshing not considered due to deep explosion. The dam and its retained water excited by detonating large explosive charges in deep water upstrea...
متن کاملOrigin and hydrogeochemical evolution of Azarshahr travertine springs, NW Iran
1-Introduction Travertines are limestones that form where hot groundwaters rich in calcium and bicarbonate emerge at springs. Travertines cover a large area southwest of Azarshahr (East Azarbaijan province), in some parts of which active springs are currently settling travertine. One of the main questions about travertine springs is their origin, as well as the secondary processes that have ch...
متن کاملEstimating the Mechanical Properties of Travertine Building Stones Due to Salt Crystallization Using Multivariate Regression Analysis
Salt crystallization is one of the most powerful weathering agents that may cause a rapid change in the mechanical properties of stones, and thus limit their durability. Consequently, determining the mechanical properties of stones due to salt crystallization is important for natural building stones used in marine environmental and mild climatic conditions, which expose excessive salt crys...
